From Basement to Space: Jared Isaacman’s Remarkable Journey
Jared Isaacman, once a high school dropout living in his parents’ basement in New Jersey, has transformed into a tech billionaire and space explorer. His journey from humble beginnings to pioneering spacewalks is inspiring.
First Steps in Business
At 16, Jared Isaacman left high school and launched Shift4 Payments, a payment processing company. With a $10,000 check from his grandfather, he set up the business in his childhood basement. He used the money to buy a few computers and phones to get started. His first employees included his friend Brendan Lauber and his father.
Shift4 soon became a leader in the industry, growing to 2,000 employees with a market value of $7.4 billion. Isaacman reminisced about the early days of eating Chinese food with a small team in the basement. “At that age, you could never imagine the company would become worth billions,” he said.

Space Exploration and Record-Breaking
Isaacman’s success in business paved the way for his space ambitions. He funded and led the first civilian mission to space aboard SpaceX’s Dragon capsule. Recently, he and SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis tested new spacesuits during the Polaris Dawn mission, marking the first private spacewalk by nonprofessional astronauts.
Isaacman’s passion for flying also led him to break a world record in 2009, flying a Cessna Citation CJ2 around the globe in under 62 hours. Later, he founded Draken International, which trains U.S. Air Force pilots. He sold the company in 2020 for a “nine-figure sum.”
A Passionate Explorer
Reflecting on his journey, Isaacman shared, “I’m super lucky in life. From a teenage basement startup to space—it’s turned into quite the empire.” His love for space continues to drive him as he explores new frontiers for humanity.
