The Election Commission has rescheduled Haryana polls date from October 1 to October 5. This change also shifts the counting day for both Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir assembly elections from October 4 to October 8.

The decision respects the Bishnoi community’s traditions. They participate in the Asoj Amavasya festival, which honors their Guru Jambheshwar. The festival coincides with the original polling date, prompting concerns that many Bishnoi community members would miss voting.

Representations from national and state political parties, along with the All India Bishnoi Mahasabha, emphasized the impact on voter turnout. They pointed out that a significant number of Bishnoi people from Haryana would travel to Rajasthan for the festival, potentially reducing voter participation in the assembly elections.
Taking these concerns into account, the Election Commission decided to rescheduled Haryana Polls date to October 5. However, polling dates in Jammu and Kashmir remain unchanged. Voting there will proceed in three phases: September 18, September 25, and October 1.
