IIT Guwahati Faces Protests After Fourth Student Death in 2023
A tragic incident at the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G), has led to widespread protests. A 21-year-old student from Uttar Pradesh was found dead in his hostel room, marking the fourth student death at the prestigious institute this year. The news has raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of the institute’s mental health and welfare programs.
Tragic Discovery and Investigation
The body of the male student has been sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for a postmortem examination. Police have launched an investigation into the case. A police officer confirmed that the inquiry is ongoing, and more details will emerge as the investigation progresses.
Institute’s Response
IIT Guwahati expressed deep sorrow over the student’s death. An official statement from the institute extended condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased. “IITG is deeply saddened to report the loss of a student from our community. We encourage our students to reach out to our support networks. The institute remains committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for all students,” a spokesperson said.
The incident has reignited concerns about the mental health resources available to students at the institute. Many students have questioned whether enough is being done to address mental health issues on campus, especially given the recent series of tragedies.

Growing Concerns Over Mental Health Support
This latest incident comes just weeks after the death of a 24-year-old MTech student on August 9, also found in her hostel room. With four student deaths this year alone, students have begun protesting, calling for improved mental health services and greater attention to their well-being.
IIT Guwahati has reiterated its commitment to student mental health, but the recent deaths have left the community shaken. Students are demanding more action, urging the administration to take stronger steps to prevent further tragedies.
As the investigation continues, the IIT-G community is left grappling with grief and searching for answers, while calls for better mental health support grow louder.
