The number of income tax returns (ITRs) filed for assessment year (AY) 2024-25 has surged by 8% to 5 crore so far, according to a statement by the Income Tax Department on Saturday. To address frequent glitches and technical issues on the IT website during peak e-filing periods, the department has partnered with tech giant Infosys.
In a social media post, the Income Tax Department highlighted its collaboration with Infosys to ensure a seamless e-filing experience. Infosys has been entrusted with managing the operations of the e-filing portal to provide uninterrupted services, according to the post.
“More than 5 crore ITRs for AY 2024-25 have already been received on the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal by July 26, 2024. This is 8% more than the ITRs filed in the preceding year. Over 28 lakh ITRs were received on July 26 alone. @Infosys is the technology partner of ITD for operating the e-filing portal,” the IT department announced.
Despite the rising number of ITRs filed this year, the chances of extending the July 31 filing deadline are slim. By July 22, over 4 crore ITRs had already been filed, and an additional 28 lakh were filed on July 26, as per the IT department. Therefore, an extension of the filing deadline is unlikely.

Although Infosys has been brought on board to ensure smooth operation during the e-filing peak, users have reported various issues while filing their ITRs on the Income Tax website. Many taxpayers have faced difficulties logging into their accounts, slow website response, document upload problems, and issues with Aadhaar-based OTP verification.
