India Pushes for Skilled Professionals’ Mobility Amid H-1B Visa Debate
India has stressed the importance of allowing skilled professionals to move between India and the US. This, officials say, benefits both countries economically and technologically.
The discussion comes amid ongoing debates over H-1B visas. Recently, billionaire Elon Musk took a strong stance on the issue.
Elon Musk Defends H-1B Program
Musk voiced his support on social media, saying the H-1B visa allowed him and other key professionals to build companies like SpaceX and Tesla.
“The reason I’m in America along with so many critical people who built SpaceX, Tesla, and hundreds of other companies that made America strong is because of H-1B,” Musk said.
He added passionately, “I will go to war on this issue the likes of which you cannot possibly comprehend.”
His statement highlights the ongoing divide among political allies of Donald Trump. While some see the program as necessary for the tech industry, others worry it takes jobs from Americans.
India Emphasizes Mutual Benefits
India’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, pointed out that skilled professionals boost US-India ties.
“Our countries have a strong economic partnership, and skilled professionals are an essential part of that,” Jaiswal said during a press conference.
He emphasized that the technical expertise provided by Indian professionals greatly benefits both nations. “We look forward to deepening our economic ties, which are mutually beneficial,” he added.
H-1B Visa Numbers Highlight India’s Role
Recent data shows India received around 78% of the 265,777 H-1B visas issued by the US in the fiscal year ending September 2023. These figures underscore the significant contribution of Indian professionals to America’s tech sector.
Donald Trump himself supports the H-1B program, despite earlier attempts to restrict it. Musk has taken an even stronger stand, vowing to fight for it.
India and US Strengthen Economic Ties
India’s foreign minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, has already engaged with Trump’s transition team to further strengthen ties. Both nations see the movement of skilled professionals as a key element in their partnership.
Bilateral trade between the two countries reached USD 129 billion in 2022-23, reflecting the growing cooperation.
Mutual Gains from Skilled Professionals
The exchange of skilled professionals between India and the US plays a critical role in their economic and technological growth. As both nations navigate this complex issue, mutual benefits remain a top priority.
