Assam CM Faces Backlash Over Beef Ban
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a complete ban on beef consumption in restaurants, hotels, and public places. This decision expands the Assam Cattle Preservation Act of 2021. Earlier, the law only restricted beef near temples. Sarma now aims for a state-wide implementation.
Samajwadi Party MP Iqra Hasan strongly criticized this move. She called it an attack on personal freedom. “India’s beauty lies in its diversity. Such decisions go against the Constitution,” said Iqra Hasan during Parliament’s Winter Session. She warned that government interference in personal choices could lead to dictatorship.
Opposition Voices Concerns
Other opposition leaders also criticized the Assam government. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi accused Sarma of seeking political gains. She reminded him of BJP’s loss in Jharkhand. “He tried to make the Jharkhand election about Hindus vs Muslims and lost. This decision appears to follow the same pattern,” she said.
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi echoed similar sentiments. He claimed Sarma’s actions aim to distract from BJP’s electoral failures. “BJP faced a humiliating defeat in Jharkhand under Sarma’s leadership. The people rejected hatred and division. Assam will likely respond the same way in upcoming elections,” Gogoi remarked.
The beef ban has ignited a fierce debate over personal freedoms, political motives, and constitutional values.
