Protests Against Sambhal Killings Intensify
Students from Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) held protests this week over the recent killings of five Muslim community members in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. Police firing during a protest at the Shahi Jama Masjid reportedly led to the deaths of six young men, including Noman, Naeem, and Mohd Bilal Ansari.
Jamia Students Condemn Police Action
On November 27, Jamia students organized a protest led by groups like the Fraternity Movement and AISA. They accused the police of targeting Muslims and condemned the aggressive action during the mosque survey. Protesters carried placards with messages such as “Babri will not be repeated” and “#AllEyesOnIndianMosques.”
The students also blamed advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain for inciting violence. Jain had filed a petition alleging that the Sambhal Jama Masjid was a temple, escalating tensions. Protesters demanded justice and strict implementation of the Places of Worship Act, 1991.
JNU Stages Solidarity Protest
A day earlier, JNU students formed a human chain at Connaught Place, New Delhi, condemning the killings. JNU’s Dalit student union president, Dhananjay, criticized UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, accusing the government of enabling police violence against Muslims.
Detentions Amid Protests
Amid the demonstrations, Delhi Police detained several AISA activists and students near UP Bhawan. The protests highlighted growing frustration over perceived injustices against the Muslim community and calls for stricter accountability.
