Justice Vibhu Bakhru Becomes Acting Chief Justice
The Centre has appointed Justice Vibhu Bakhru as the Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. This decision follows the elevation of Justice Manmohan to the Supreme Court.
The Union Ministry of Law and Justice issued the notification shortly after the clearance of Justice Manmohan’s elevation. The appointment comes under Article 223 of the Constitution, allowing the President to name a puisne judge as acting Chief Justice when the position becomes vacant.
About Justice Vibhu Bakhru
Justice Bakhru was born in Nagpur in 1966 and pursued his education in Delhi. He initially trained as a Chartered Accountant and qualified in 1989. He earned his LLB degree in 1990 and began practicing law in the Supreme Court, Delhi High Court, and other tribunals.
He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court on April 17, 2013. Later, on March 18, 2015, he became a Permanent Judge.
Justice Manmohan’s Supreme Court Elevation
Earlier in the day, the Centre confirmed Justice Manmohan’s appointment to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended his elevation last week, noting that only one current Supreme Court judge represented the Delhi High Court.
Justice Manmohan joined the Delhi High Court as a judge in March 2008 and became its Chief Justice on September 29. He ranks second in seniority among High Court judges across India and is the senior-most in the Delhi High Court.
This transition marks a significant development for the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court.
