Srinagar, Aug 20, 2024: The Kashmir Valley was rattled by a 4.9-magnitude earthquake early on Tuesday morning. The tremor, recorded at 6:45 AM, had its epicenter in the Baramulla district in northern Kashmir, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The NCS detailed the quake’s specifics, noting, “An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred on 20/08/2024 at 06:45:57 IST, with latitude 34.17 N and longitude 74.16 E, at a depth of 5 km, located in Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir.”
Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of significant damage or loss of life. However, reports indicate that a man sustained injuries after jumping from a building in Baramulla, attempting to escape the tremors.
Kashmir Valley, along with regions like Doda, Ramban, and Kishtwar in Jammu, lies in Seismic Zone V, a zone identified as having a very high risk of damage from earthquakes, as per the Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority.
