A plane carrying over 60 people crashed near Aktau in Kazakhstan, leaving dozens feared dead. More than 20 passengers survived, authorities confirmed. The Kazakhstan Emergencies Ministry reported the incident occurred near Aktau Airport.
Azerbaijan Airlines Flight Forced to Divert
The Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190, flight number 8243, was traveling from Baku to Grozny in Russia’s Chechnya. Due to heavy fog in Grozny, the flight was rerouted to Aktau. The crash happened about 3 kilometers from the city.
Casualty Numbers Remain Uncertain
At least 25 people survived the crash. However, early reports suggest 42 passengers may have lost their lives. Officials are yet to confirm the exact number of fatalities. Survivors are being treated at a nearby hospital, according to emergency responders.
Harrowing Visuals Surface
Social media shared videos showing the aircraft turning into a fireball upon crashing. Other footage captured first responders near the shattered remains, working to save survivors.
