Kejriwal Promises to Waive Inflated Water Bills in Delhi
AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal announced on Saturday that his party would waive all inflated water bills if they return to power after the upcoming Delhi assembly elections. Addressing a press conference at the AAP headquarters, he urged residents to stop paying incorrect water bills.
“Delhi government provides 20,000 liters of free water per month to all households. Around 12 lakh families get zero bills. But after I went to jail, people started receiving huge bills running into thousands and lakhs,” Kejriwal said. “Don’t pay those bills. We will waive them once we form the government again.”
Water Bill Waiver Details to Be Disclosed After Polls
Kejriwal was arrested in March 2024 over alleged irregularities in Delhi’s excise policy. He spent six months in jail before securing bail in September. He assured voters that details of the water bill waiver scheme would be shared after the elections.
Delhi residents have been receiving 20,000 liters of free water each month since AAP came to power in 2015. However, many reported inflated bills after the Covid-19 pandemic, when water meter readings were disrupted.
In February 2024, AAP announced a one-time settlement scheme for unpaid water bills. But the scheme couldn’t be implemented due to bureaucratic hurdles.
Water Bill Policy | Details |
---|---|
Free water provided per month | 20,000 liters |
Households receiving zero bills | 1.2 million |
Total registered water consumers | 2.7 million |
Kejriwal Rolls Out Welfare Promises
Kejriwal also announced several welfare schemes ahead of the elections. He promised to increase allowances under the Mahila Samman Yojana to ₹2,100 per month for women.
The AAP chief pledged free medical treatment for elderly citizens in both private and government hospitals. He also introduced the Pujari Granthi Yojana, offering ₹18,000 per month to Hindu and Sikh priests.
Delhi Assembly Elections in February
Delhi is set to go to the polls in February as the current assembly’s term ends on February 23.
The BJP has yet to respond to Kejriwal’s announcements.
