Sanjay Roy Convicted in Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital Case
A Kolkata court has convicted 33-year-old Sanjay Roy in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital. Roy, a former civic police volunteer, will be sentenced on Monday. This verdict brings some closure to the horrific incident that shook the nation last year.
Tragic Incident Sparks Outrage
The victim, a 31-year-old doctor on duty on August 8, was found dead the next morning. Her brutal death led to protests across Bengal. The local media called her “Abhaya,” inspired by the 2012 Delhi rape case victim, “Nirbhaya.”
Court Finds Roy Guilty
The Additional District and Sessions Court in Sealdah delivered a 160-page judgment. It found Roy guilty under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to rape, murder, and causing death. Judge Anirban Das noted flaws in the police and hospital authorities’ actions during the investigation.
The victim’s father expressed gratitude to the court. He told the judge, “You have honored the faith I had in you,” after the conviction.
Convict Maintains Innocence
Sanjay Roy, brought to court amid tight security, claimed he was framed. Despite his earlier confession, he blamed a senior officer, alleging their involvement. His trial was conducted in-camera, with statements from 50 witnesses recorded.
Evidence Tampering and Arrests
Roy was arrested by Kolkata Police a day after the victim’s body was discovered. The CBI later took over the investigation, citing concerns about evidence tampering. The hospital’s principal, Sandip Ghosh, and a local police officer, Abhijit Mondal, were also arrested for alleged evidence destruction but were released on default bail.
The full judgment is awaited, expected to clarify the tampering allegations.
Justice for the Medical Community
This case has reignited hope among doctors who protested for better security and infrastructure after the incident. The conviction is seen as a step toward ensuring safer work environments for healthcare professionals.
The sentencing on Monday will mark a pivotal moment in this quest for justice.
