Kolkata: The Kolkata Police has issued summons to actor-turned-politician and BJP leader Locket Chatterjee, along with doctors Kunal Sarkar and Subarno Goswami, in relation to the alleged spread of misinformation following the tragic murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The notices require their appearance for questioning at 3 pm today.
The 31-year-old trainee doctor was found brutally murdered in the seminar hall of the government-run hospital on August 9, an incident that has sparked nationwide outrage and protests. Unfortunately, the case has also been plagued by the circulation of misleading information on social media.
One such claim was made by Dr. Goswami, who, during various media interactions, stated that he had reviewed the post-mortem report. He alleged that it contained shocking details, including the presence of 150 grams of semen, a fractured pelvic bone, and signs of gang rape.
However, the Kolkata Police have firmly denied these claims, labeling them as baseless. Official statements clarified that the post-mortem report does not include such findings. According to the police, these rumors, which rapidly spread across social media platforms, only served to fuel public outrage without any factual basis.
Locket Chatterjee is also under scrutiny for allegedly sharing the victim’s name and photograph on social media. In response to the summons, Chatterjee criticized the Kolkata Police for focusing on social media posts instead of delivering justice to the victim.
“The victim in the RG Kar case is still waiting for justice. But the Kolkata Police seems more interested in monitoring social media posts of opposition leaders and ordinary citizens. The administration is using the police to track what opposition leaders are posting online,” Chatterjee posted on X (formerly Twitter) in Bangla.
Dr. Sarkar, a cardiologist, confirmed that he received a summons to appear at the Kolkata Police headquarters in Lalbazar. “Yes, I have received the summons. But I am currently out of town and have informed the Kolkata Police about it. I’m unsure why they called me, but it seems my social media comments may have triggered some reactions nationally and internationally,” Dr. Sarkar told PTI.
Dr. Goswami, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Purba Bardhaman district, stated that he has yet to receive the summons. “I have not received anything so far. I don’t understand why the Kolkata Police would summon me when they are not even investigating the case. I have always been willing to cooperate fully with the investigation. I did not reveal the identity of the victim or spread any rumors,” Dr. Goswami said.
Meanwhile, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, was questioned by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials for the second consecutive day on Saturday. The questioning, which lasted several hours, focused on his actions and responses on the night of the incident. The CBI is cross-referencing Dr. Ghosh’s account with testimonies from other medical staff and police officers who were present that night.
Dr. Ghosh resigned two days after the doctor’s body was discovered on August 9. The CBI is investigating around 40 individuals, including doctors, interns, and police officers, and has already questioned over 20 people. Forensic teams have been deployed to collect and analyze evidence from multiple locations, including RG Kar hospital and the residence of the prime suspect, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police.
The case has triggered widespread protests by doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers demanding stronger legal protections and the designation of hospitals as safe zones. In response, the Union Home Ministry has directed state police forces to provide continuous updates on the law and order situation amid these ongoing protests.
