Centre Creates Five New Districts in Ladakh
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the creation of five new districts in Ladakh, raising the total to seven. The new districts—Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang—were created to bring governance closer to the people. This decision fulfills a long-pending demand from the local population.
Leaders Welcome the Decision
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the creation of these districts as a step toward better governance and prosperity for Ladakh. Former BJP MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal called it a ‘Janmashtami’ gift for the people. Ladakh Lt Governor Brig (Retd) B D Mirsha was also praised for his efforts in making this happen.
Struggle for Statehood Continues
Despite the new districts, the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) remain focused on their primary demands, including statehood and the extension of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and other local leaders emphasized that their peaceful struggle would continue until these demands are met. The creation of new districts is seen as a positive step, but not a substitute for the broader autonomy they seek.
