LG Takes Action on Delhi Waqf Board CEO Appointment
Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena has approved the appointment of IAS officer Azimul Haque as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Delhi Waqf Board. This decision follows the vacant post, which has been unfilled since November 28, 2024.
LG Criticizes AAP Government’s Delay
Saxena slammed the AAP government for its “callousness” in handling the matter. He pointed out that the government had delayed sending a proposal to assign additional charge for over a month. This delay, according to Saxena, halted the day-to-day operations of the Board, including the disbursement of salaries to imams and other board functionaries.
The LG expressed his concern for the hardships faced by the imams and mutawallis, who have been suffering due to non-payment of salaries. In light of these challenges, Saxena approved the proposal for the CEO’s appointment, but emphasized that it must be ratified by the Board before it takes effect.
Legal Concerns Over Appointment Process
Despite approving the proposal, Saxena criticized the government’s failure to follow legal procedures. According to the Delhi Waqf Act of 1995, the appointment of a CEO must follow the provisions outlined in Section 23 of the Act, which requires a panel of two names from the Board to be submitted to the state government for consideration.
However, Saxena revealed that the National Capital Civil Service Authority had bypassed this process and instead submitted a single name for the CEO position, which he described as a casual approach. He stressed that future proposals must adhere strictly to the legal provisions.
This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between the Delhi government and the Lieutenant Governor over the proper functioning of key administrative processes.
