Licypriya Kangujam Urges G20 Leaders to Act on Manipur Crisis and Climate Change
Young climate activist Licypriya Kangujam delivered a powerful address at the G20 Summit 2024 in Rio de Janeiro. She urged world leaders to take decisive action against Kuki narco-terrorists and condemned the ongoing violence in Manipur.
Calls for Justice and Global Attention
Speaking at the summit, Licypriya highlighted the atrocities committed during the Jiribam incident. She described how six Meitei women, including three minors, were kidnapped, raped, and murdered. Two men were also burned alive.
On the G20 stage, she raised slogans like “Justice for Meitei” and “Justice for Manipur.” She called the conflict a violation of international law and urged the global community to stop the ethnic cleansing of Meiteis.
A “New Climate War”
Licypriya framed the Manipur conflict as a “New Climate War,” contrasting communities that cherish nature with those exploiting it. She called for the G20 to declare deforestation an international crime.
Addressing Global Climate Issues
The activist also drew attention to the climate crisis in Timor-Leste. She warned of rising sea levels threatening lives and cultural heritage, emphasizing the urgency for rich nations to compensate the Global South for loss and damage.
Youth Demands on Climate Action
Licypriya later met Brazilian President Lula da Silva. She handed over the “G20 Youth Demands on Loss & Damage Funds,” a document drafted by youth from 196 countries. President Lula assured her he would present it to G20 leaders.
A Strong Message to World Leaders
She criticized leaders for prioritizing war over addressing global issues. “We live in a world that feeds war, not children. If we spent billions on fighting hunger and climate change, the earth would be a better place,” she said.
Licypriya’s address was a stark reminder of the urgent need for global action on both human rights and climate justice.
