Malala Asks Muslim Leaders to Reject Taliban’s Restrictions on Women
Malala Yousafzai urged Muslim leaders not to legitimise the Afghan Taliban government. She asked them to show real leadership by opposing the restrictions on women’s education.
“Do not legitimise them,” Malala said at a summit on girls’ education held in Islamabad. The two-day event brought together ministers and education officials from Muslim-majority nations. It was supported by the Muslim World League.
Malala, 27, reminded leaders that now is the time to raise their voices. “You can show true leadership. You can show true Islam,” she said.
Since returning to power in 2021, the Taliban have imposed strict laws. They banned women and girls from schools, universities, and many government jobs. The United Nations has called their policies “gender apartheid.”
Although the Afghan Taliban were invited, they did not attend the summit. Pakistan’s Education Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui confirmed their absence.
Malala told the summit that the Taliban don’t see women as humans. “They cloak their crimes in cultural and religious justification,” she said.
Malala was shot in 2012 by the Pakistani Taliban for campaigning for girls’ education. She survived the attack and became a global advocate for women’s rights. In 2014, she won the Nobel Peace Prize.
“The Taliban want to erase women and girls from society,” she told the audience.
Countries remain divided on how to engage with the Taliban. Some believe isolating them is the answer. Others prefer dialogue to influence their policies.
Although no country has officially recognised the Taliban, several regional governments have engaged with them on trade and security matters.
The global community continues to debate how to address the Taliban’s treatment of women. Malala’s call for action adds more pressure on Muslim leaders to take a stand.
