Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien praised Mamata Banerjee’s life of simplicity after a report ranked her the poorest chief minister in India. “Her life is not ordinary. It’s a story of selfless public service, nurtured with compassion from a simple home in Kolkata. Hers is a once-in-100-years story,” he said.
Poorest Among Chief Ministers
The report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) revealed that Mamata Banerjee has assets worth just over ₹15 lakh, making her the CM with the lowest assets.
In contrast, Andhra Pradesh’s N. Chandrababu Naidu tops the list with assets over ₹931 crore. Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu follows with over ₹332 crore, while Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah ranks third with more than ₹51 crore.
Wealth Distribution Among CMs
According to the report, the average assets per CM across states and Union Territories stand at ₹52.59 crore. Jammu and Kashmir’s Omar Abdullah, with assets worth ₹55 lakh, is the second poorest CM, followed by Kerala’s Pinarayi Vijayan at ₹1.18 crore.
Income Comparisons
India’s per capita net national income (NNI) for 2023-2024 is approximately ₹1,85,854. The average self-income of a chief minister is ₹13,64,310, which is 7.3 times the nation’s average per capita income.
The report highlights a sharp contrast between leaders’ lifestyles, with Mamata Banerjee’s simplicity standing out as a testament to her commitment to public service.
