Man Killed in Connaught Place Hit-and-Run, Driver Arrested
A homeless man was killed after being hit by a car and dragged for around 10 meters in Connaught Place, New Delhi, officials said on Saturday. The driver, who fled the scene after the accident, was arrested the next day.
Victim Declared Dead at Hospital
The victim, identified as 45-year-old Lekhraj, was hit by the car on Wednesday afternoon. He was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead by doctors upon arrival, according to police officials.
Driver Tracked Through CCTV
Shivam Dubey, the 28-year-old driver, was arrested after police tracked him down using CCTV footage. According to a police officer, Dubey had borrowed a car from a friend in Mahipalpur, South Delhi, and was driving through Connaught Place when the accident occurred.
Incident Details
Around 3:25 pm, Dubey allegedly hit Lekhraj while he was crossing the road near Barakhamba Radial Road in Connaught Place’s outer circle. After the impact, Lekhraj got stuck under the car’s wheels, but Dubey reportedly continued driving, dragging the victim for around 10 meters before fleeing the scene, leaving Lekhraj behind.
Arrest and Charges
After fleeing, Dubey returned the car to his friend. Police reviewed CCTV footage from the area and traced the vehicle’s owner, leading to Dubey’s arrest. He has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Investigation Ongoing
The car involved in the incident has been impounded, and further investigations are underway to determine the full details of the case.
