Six Killed in Fresh Violence in Manipur’s Jiribam District
Six people were killed in a fresh outbreak of violence in Manipur’s Jiribam district, with suspected Kuki insurgents launching an attack on Nungchappi village. The police confirmed that one of the victims was a 63-year-old man, Yurembam Kulendra Singha. This incident follows the killing of another elderly man from the Meitei community in a rocket-propelled attack in Moirang town just a day earlier.
Clashes Between Armed Groups
In addition to the civilian casualties, five more people were killed in a gunfight between armed Meitei defense volunteers and Kuki insurgents. According to police sources, the violence erupted as these groups exchanged fire, intensifying the ongoing conflict in the region.
Police Response
Jiribam’s Superintendent of Police and his team were dispatched to the area but were met with gunfire. The Manipur police responded with force, managing to bring the situation under control. The Inspector General of Police (Intelligence), K Kabib, detailed the sequence of events, revealing that security forces destroyed two militant bunkers during combing operations following the attacks.

Anti-Drone System Deployed
Following recent drone attacks by suspected Kuki insurgents in Imphal West, the police have deployed an anti-drone system, marking the first use of weaponized drones on Indian soil by insurgents. Army helicopters have been deployed to monitor the region while combing operations continue in both the hills and valleys.
Rising Tensions and Protests
Tensions remain high, with protesters in Imphal expressing frustration over the lack of security. Despite the presence of over 50,000 central security forces, civilians feel unprotected, prompting some to attempt looting weapons from Manipur Rifles camps. Security forces intervened, using tear gas and blank rounds to disperse the crowds. Two policemen were injured during the clash.
Residents like M Nirmala Devi voiced their concerns, stating, “People are being killed in their homes despite the security presence. We are left with no choice but to defend ourselves.”
Manipur’s fragile peace continues to unravel as violent clashes persist, raising concerns about the state’s stability and the effectiveness of ongoing peace initiatives.
