Farooq Abdullah, the chief of the National Conference, expressed hopes for the return of Kashmiri Pandits. His comments came as the party prepares to form a government in Jammu and Kashmir. On Saturday, Abdullah stated that he and his party await the return of those forced to leave their homes during the early 1990s exodus.
When asked about Kashmiri Pandits, he said, “I hope our brothers and sisters return home. Now is the time for them to come back.” Abdullah emphasized that the party cares about all communities, saying, “We think about everyone, including the people of Jammu.”
Emphasizing Equality
Abdullah highlighted the NC’s commitment to equality, stating that his party does not discriminate between Hindus and Muslims. “There’s a place for everyone in Kashmir,” he added.
Assurance of Support
The National Conference chief urged Kashmiri Pandits to return and take care of their homes. He promised that they would be welcomed with open arms. Furthermore, Abdullah assured that the NC government would facilitate their return. “Their return is long overdue. They should have come back long ago,” he noted. He emphasized that the NC is not the enemy of Kashmiri Pandits. “We are Indians, and we want to take everyone along,” he affirmed.
NC-Congress Alliance Forms Government
The National Conference-Congress alliance has officially staked its claim to form the government in Jammu and Kashmir. This follows their victory in 48 of the 90 assembly constituencies, as reported by NC leader Omar Abdullah. The NC secured 42 seats, while Congress won six. The BJP emerged as the second-largest party with 29 seats. This marks the first elected government in Jammu and Kashmir in a decade.
