On Monday, NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo took action against a controversial video circulating on social media platform X, which allegedly showed children participating in political campaigning by AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi Chief Minister Atishi. Kanoongo directed X to immediately remove the video and raised the issue with Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, urging him to issue guidelines to political parties to prevent the involvement of children in political activities.
In his letters to both the CEC and Vinay Prakash, the Resident Grievances Officer at X, NHRC member Kanoongo expressed deep concern about the participation of children in political campaigns. The NHRC took suo motu cognizance of the matter, citing the violation of legal provisions, including the guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015.
Although the Model Code of Conduct for Delhi’s upcoming Assembly elections has not yet come into force, the NHRC emphasized the need for immediate intervention. The Commission directed X to remove the objectionable post(s) and submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) detailing the corrective steps within seven days.
