Punjab Rules Out Amphibious Bus Service at Harike
Tourism and Cultural Affairs Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond announced on Tuesday that the amphibious bus service at Harike in Ranjit Sagar Lake will not be revived. He emphasized that there is no proposal under consideration for restarting the project.
Criticism of the Past Government
Sond criticized previous governments for their handling of the project.
- Financial Waste: He highlighted that ₹8.63 crore was spent on the service, which he termed a poor financial decision.
- Corruption Allegations: The project has become a symbol of corruption and is currently under investigation.
Safety Concerns
Sond warned of serious safety risks if the bus were re-launched. He stated that the vehicle is unfit for operation and could lead to major accidents.
Commitment to Public Welfare
The minister assured that the government prioritizes public safety and financial prudence. “We will not take any step that endangers the lives or finances of Punjab’s citizens,” he said.
Project Background
The amphibious bus service was proposed during the SAD-BJP government’s second term (2012-17). However, the project failed to materialize and has been under scrutiny ever since.
