After the Election Commission declared the assembly election results, four independent MLAs joined the National Conference (NC) alliance on Thursday. This boosted NC’s numbers, and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was unanimously chosen as the leader of the party’s legislative group.
However, a final decision on the Chief Minister’s role will be made after consultations with the alliance partners.
The NC secured 42 seats in the 90-member assembly, just short of the 46-seat majority. With its ally Congress winning six seats, the NC initially needed support. But with the backing of four independent MLAs, the NC now has the majority on its own, reducing its reliance on Congress. This development has weakened Congress’s bargaining power in the alliance.
Jammu and Kashmir NC chief Farooq Abdullah announced that party Vice President Omar Abdullah would become the next Chief Minister. However, Omar stated that the final decision lies with the legislators and the alliance.
“I deeply appreciate my father’s trust in me,” Omar said, adding that the choice of Chief Minister must follow procedure. “The decision is in the hands of the legislators and the alliance. I will always stick to the rules and ensure we do things by the book,” he told ANI.
