Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez inaugurated the Tata-Airbus C295 aircraft plant in Vadodara, Gujarat. Sanchez arrived in India for a three-day visit, and the leaders jointly launched the facility on Monday.
This project, among India’s ambitious defense initiatives, is built through collaboration between Tata and Airbus Spain at Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL). The Tata-Airbus C295 program plans for 56 aircraft: 16 directly from Airbus Spain, while 40 will be assembled in India.
In February, the Defense Acquisitions Council, led by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, approved an additional proposal for 15 more C295 planes. Nine are slated for the Navy and six for the Coast Guard.
The new Vadodara facility marks a significant step in India’s defense strength. It aims to develop a full ecosystem—from manufacturing to testing, assembly, and maintenance of the C295 aircraft. This project replaces the IAF’s HS-748 Avro fleet, breaking the defense production monopoly of Hindustan Aeronautics and marking a first for the private sector in military aircraft production in India.
Alongside Tata, Bharat Electronics Ltd., Bharat Dynamics Ltd., and several MSMEs will support the facility, aligning with India’s goal of becoming a global defense manufacturing hub.
PM Modi is also scheduled to visit the Laxmi Vilas Palace and inaugurate the Bharat Mata Sarovar in Amreli, followed by laying foundations for projects valued at over ₹4,800 crore.
