PM Modi’s Annual Gesture
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will send a ceremonial chadar to the Ajmer Sharif Dargah on Thursday. This continues his yearly tradition of offering respects during the Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti.
The chadar will be handed over to Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and BJP Minority Morcha President Jamal Siddiqui at 6 PM. They will present it at the shrine on the Prime Minister’s behalf.
Since becoming PM, Modi has sent the chadar 10 times. This year marks his 11th offering, underscoring his continued respect for the Sufi tradition.
Controversy Surrounding Ajmer Sharif
The offering comes amid ongoing controversy over the Ajmer Sharif Dargah. A petition claims the revered Sufi shrine is actually a Shiva temple. Last year, a Rajasthan court accepted the petition, sparking debates.
The Dargah Committee has filed a motion to dismiss the petition. The next hearing is scheduled for January 24.
Urs Festival Observed with Reverence
The Urs festival marks the death anniversary of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. It attracts millions of devotees from India and beyond.
This year, the 813th Urs began on December 28, 2024. Devotees believe offering a chadar during this time brings blessings and fulfills vows.
Ajmer Sharif remains one of India’s most revered Sufi shrines, drawing pilgrims from all walks of life.
