Historic Visit Marks a New Chapter in India-Ukraine Relations
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Ukraine for the first time since its independence. This visit marked a significant milestone in bilateral relations. Four important agreements were signed between the two nations, covering various cooperation areas.
Strategic Partnership and Peace Efforts Discussed
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted the visit’s importance, emphasizing the strengthened ties. A joint statement was issued, focusing on strategic partnership, enhanced trade, and continued military-technical cooperation.

The statement reaffirmed their commitment to international law, emphasizing the UN Charter’s principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty. Both leaders agreed to deepen bilateral dialogue to uphold these values.
India’s Role in Peace Initiatives
PM Modi arrived in Kyiv, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister since Ukraine’s independence in 1991. The discussions took place amid the ongoing conflict, with PM Modi expressing India’s willingness to contribute to peace efforts. He stressed India’s commitment to peace, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and Buddha, and offered personal involvement in resolving the conflict.
Expanding Trade Relations
Both leaders instructed the Indian-Ukrainian Intergovernmental Commission (IGC) to explore ways to restore and expand bilateral trade. The conflict has significantly reduced trade between the two nations since 2022.
Diplomatic Engagement and UN Reforms
PM Modi also discussed his recent conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He reiterated that war is not a solution and emphasized the need for diplomatic engagement.
The visit is seen as a diplomatic balancing act, especially after PM Modi’s recent trip to Russia. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the importance of practical engagement to find a peaceful resolution.
Both nations called for UN Security Council reforms to reflect current global realities. Ukraine reiterated its support for India’s bid for permanent membership in an expanded Security Council.
