PM Modi’s Historic Visit to Brunei: Key Highlights
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a groundbreaking state visit to Brunei, marking the first-ever bilateral trip by an Indian prime minister to the Southeast Asian nation. The visit is part of a two-nation tour that also includes Singapore.
Strengthening Diplomatic Ties
On the second day of his visit, PM Modi met with the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah. The Sultan, one of the world’s longest-reigning monarchs and once the richest person globally, welcomed the Indian prime minister. PM Modi shared his delight in meeting the Sultan, highlighting their discussions on enhancing bilateral ties, trade, and people-to-people exchanges.
A Historic Milestone
PM Modi’s visit coincides with the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Brunei. The two leaders focused on strengthening cooperation in key areas such as defense, trade, investment, energy, space technology, and health. Several MoUs are expected to be signed during the visit.
Royal Hospitality
The Sultan hosted PM Modi for a banquet lunch at the Istana Nurul Iman Palace, the world’s largest palace, known for its grandeur and architectural marvels. The palace features 1,788 rooms, 257 bathrooms, and 44 staircases made of 38 kinds of marble, making it a Guinness World Record holder.
Moving Forward to Singapore
After the lunch, PM Modi will head to Singapore. There, he will meet members of the Indian community and be hosted for dinner by Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
Cultural and Diplomatic Engagements
Earlier in his visit, PM Modi paid a visit to the renowned Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in Brunei, one of the most iconic structures in the region. He also inaugurated the new Chancery of the Indian High Commission in Brunei, further cementing India’s diplomatic presence in the country.
PM Modi’s visit not only strengthens India’s ties with Brunei but also lays the groundwork for future cooperation in multiple sectors, reflecting the growing partnership between the two nations.
