Prashant Kishor Faces Criticism Over Luxury Van During Hunger Strike
Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor is leading a hunger strike at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan, supporting candidates of the 70th Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) exam, who allege irregularities. However, instead of focusing on the protest’s cause, critics have questioned Kishor’s use of a plush white caravan during the strike.
The modified minibus, equipped with standard caravan fittings, became a talking point after his rivals accused him of staging an insincere protest.
“Van Necessary to Avoid False Allegations,” Says Kishor
Addressing the criticism, Kishor explained why he chose to stay in the caravan during his fast.
“If I go home to use the washroom, journalists will say I went to eat or sleep. The van ensures I don’t face such allegations,” he told reporters.
He also mocked claims that the van was rented for ₹25 lakh or cost ₹4 crore. “If anyone can give me that rent, I’ll happily take it,” he quipped.
Gandhi Maidan Protest Sparks Legal Concerns
While Kishor’s protest gained public support, the Patna district administration flagged it as a violation of protest regulations. District Magistrate Chandrashekhar Singh issued a statement highlighting that Gandhi Maidan is not an authorised protest site.
“As per a 2015 Patna High Court ruling, Gardanibagh is the designated location for protests with prior permission. Gandhi Maidan is meant for recreational activities, not sit-ins or rallies,” Singh noted.
Political rallies at Gandhi Maidan require administrative clearance, and Kishor’s sit-in did not have the necessary approvals, the official added.
Kishor Stands Firm, Compares Protest to Farmer Movement
In response to the administration’s objections, Kishor defended his choice of Gandhi Maidan.
“Large-scale farmer protests took place in Delhi without being deemed illegal. Were the Delhi authorities unaware of the rules?” he questioned.
Kishor vowed to continue his protest, even if forcibly removed. “If the administration detains me, I’ll return and resume my dharna after being released,” he declared.
Supporters Rally Behind Kishor
Visuals shared by his supporters showed a massive crowd gathered at Gandhi Maidan despite the winter chill. Protesters chanted slogans, demanding a retest for the BPSC preliminary exam.
Kishor, a former election strategist turned politician, has actively supported the protesting candidates, drawing attention to their demand for a fair retest of the entire 70th BPSC preliminary examination.
The protest, however, remains mired in controversy, with critics focusing more on his luxury van and protest location than the core issue at hand.
