In Kolkata, the Calcutta High Court has mandated that Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, take an extended leave of absence. This decision follows a series of controversies surrounding Dr. Ghosh’s handling of the recent tragic case involving the rape and murder of a doctor at the hospital.
Dr. Ghosh had initially resigned from his position on Monday, stating, “The deceased was like my daughter… as a parent, I am resigning.” However, just 24 hours later, he was reappointed as Principal of the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. This rapid reappointment has sparked outrage and scrutiny.

The court has raised concerns about the state’s management of this harrowing case, including accusations of insensitivity and a lack of timely information provided to the doctor’s parents. The parents allege that they were misled about the nature of their daughter’s death and denied access to her body.
During a recent hearing, the court criticized Dr. Ghosh’s lack of empathy and questioned the state’s motives in defending him. Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam remarked, “If the Principal is expected to be the guardian of all doctors and fails to show empathy, then he should be at home and not in any position of authority.”
The court has demanded that the police submit the case diary and Dr. Ghosh’s resignation letter by 2 p.m., emphasizing the need for transparency. The state has been urged to explain why Dr. Ghosh, who resigned due to moral responsibility, was immediately given another high-profile position.
The case has also prompted nationwide protests by medical professionals, highlighting a demand for increased workplace safety. The court has acknowledged these concerns and urged the state to address the issues raised by the doctors.
The doctor’s body was discovered in a seminar hall at the hospital with severe injuries, sparking further outrage and calls for a thorough investigation. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, has been arrested in connection with the case, though questions remain about whether additional suspects are involved.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has given the state police a deadline until Sunday to conclude their inquiries, after which the CBI will take over if necessary. The situation continues to unfold under intense scrutiny from both the public and political spheres.
