A special court in Pune granted bail to Rahul Gandhi on Friday in a defamation case linked to his remarks on Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar. The Congress leader secured bail after appearing before the court through video conferencing.
The MP/MLA court set a surety bond of ₹25,000 for granting bail. Senior Congress leader Mohan Joshi stood as the surety.
Rahul Gandhi’s lawyer, Milind Pawar, confirmed that the court also granted permanent exemption from personal appearances. This means Gandhi will not need to appear in court for future hearings.
The court scheduled the next hearing for February 18, Pawar added.
The case stems from a speech Rahul Gandhi made in London in March 2023. He had referred to a book written by Savarkar and made remarks about the freedom fighter, which led to a complaint by Savarkar’s grandnephew.
This case is one of several defamation cases filed against the Congress leader in recent years.
