Rahul Gandhi Continues in Defence Committee
Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP, retains his seat in Parliament’s Standing Committee on Defence. He has been part of this committee in the previous Lok Sabha as well. The BJP’s Radha Mohan Singh will chair the Defence Committee.
Kangana Ranaut Joins IT Committee
BJP’s first-time MP and actress Kangana Ranaut has been appointed to the Information Technology (IT) Committee. The Rajya Sabha Secretariat announced these appointments in a notification on Thursday.
Key Congress Leadership in Other Committees
Congress holds the chair of four important committees. Shashi Tharoor, former Foreign Minister, will lead the External Affairs Committee. Digvijaya Singh will chair the Education, Women, Children, Youth, and Sports Committee. Charanjit Channi, ex-Chief Minister of Punjab, will lead the Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Food Processing Committee. Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka will chair the Rural and Panchayati Raj Committee.
BJP Chairs Major Committees
The BJP, as the ruling party, has control over key committees. Radha Mohan Das Agrawal will lead the Home Affairs Committee, while Bhartruhari Mahtab will head the Finance Committee. Former ministers Anurag Thakur and Rajiv Pratap Rudy will lead the Coal, Mines, Steel, and Water Resources Committees. Nishikant Dubey will head the Communications and IT Committee, replacing Congress leader Shashi Tharoor after a dispute over Facebook’s hate speech rules in the previous Lok Sabha.
Opposition Figures in IT Committee
Samajwadi Party’s Jaya Bachchan, Shiv Sena’s Priyanka Chaturvedi, and Trinamool’s Mahua Moitra have also joined the IT Committee alongside Kangana Ranaut. DMK leaders Tiruchi Siva and Kanimozhi will head the Industry and Consumer Affairs, and Food and Public Distribution Committees, respectively.
BJP Allies Lead Additional Committees
BJP’s allies have also been assigned key leadership roles. Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP will chair the Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, while Nitish Kumar’s JDU will head the Transport, Tourism, and Culture Committee. As Maharashtra elections approach, leaders from the Shiv Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar’s NCP will lead the Energy and Petroleum Committees.
Standing Committees as ‘Mini Parliaments’
These standing committees act as ‘mini parliaments.’ Members from both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha work together to monitor the performance of their respective ministries. These appointments ensure cross-party representation and oversight of various governmental functions.
