Rahul Gandhi to Visit Parbhani, Criticized by BJP and Shiv Sena
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi will visit Maharashtra’s Parbhani on Monday, December 23. He plans to meet the families of two victims who lost their lives in the violence earlier this month.
Background of the Incident
The violence occurred on December 10 in Parbhani, Marathwada region, after a glass-enclosed replica of the Constitution near Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s statue was vandalized. This triggered widespread unrest in the city.
According to Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar, Rahul Gandhi will meet the families of Somnath Suryavanshi and Vijay Wakode. Suryavanshi allegedly died in police custody, while Wakode lost his life during the protest.
Fadnavis Responds to Allegations
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently clarified the situation in the state assembly. He stated that Suryavanshi had denied being tortured during a magistrate’s inquiry, and CCTV footage showed no evidence of police brutality. Fadnavis also announced a judicial probe into the violence.
BJP and Shiv Sena Criticism
Rahul Gandhi’s visit has drawn sharp criticism from the BJP and Shiv Sena. Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekar Bawankule called the visit “a drama” and suggested Gandhi should focus on constructive efforts to benefit society.

Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC labeled the visit hypocritical. She questioned why Gandhi showed concern for Parbhani while ignoring scuffles in Parliament. “He arrives in Parbhani by chartered flight to show support, but ignores similar issues in Parliament,” Shaina remarked.
Gandhi’s Planned Visit
Rahul Gandhi will arrive in Nanded and proceed to Parbhani. He aims to express solidarity with the victims’ families and discuss the incident with local leaders.
The BJP and Shiv Sena maintain that they stand with the victims’ families but accuse Gandhi of politicizing the issue.
