Sitanshu Kotak Set to Join as Batting Coach
Sitanshu Kotak is reportedly stepping in as India’s batting coach. He will likely join a coaching panel led by Gautam Gambhir. The team also includes assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, alongside bowling coach Morne Morkel.
Kotak could take charge when the Indian team reports for a three-day camp in Kolkata on January 18. This camp will prepare the team for their five-match T20I series against England.
Kotak’s Impressive Playing Career
Kotak had a stellar domestic cricket career spanning over two decades. He played 130 first-class matches for Saurashtra, amassing 8,061 runs at an average of 41.76. His achievements include 15 centuries and 55 half-centuries. In List A cricket, he scored 3,083 runs at an average of 42.23, with three centuries and 26 half-centuries. However, he never represented India at the international level.
Known for his solid technique, Kotak was renowned for playing patient and resilient innings.
Coaching Credentials
Kotak has significant coaching experience. He has worked with India A and Under-19 teams and often assisted VVS Laxman when Laxman temporarily filled in as the senior team’s head coach. Since 2019, Kotak has been a key figure in the coaching setups after Rahul Dravid’s elevation to head coach.
Challenges Ahead for Team India
Kotak’s appointment comes during a tough phase for Indian cricket. The team faced a series of setbacks in the 2024/25 season despite winning the T20 World Cup earlier. A 3-1 Test series loss to Australia saw them lose the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after a decade. Before that, India suffered a 3-0 Test whitewash by New Zealand and a rare ODI series loss to Sri Lanka.
The team’s batting lineup has struggled in these defeats, highlighting the need for Kotak’s expertise.
