The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) working committee on Friday accepted the resignation of Sukhbir Singh Badal as the party president. The decision came after over a month of discussions and a directive from the Akal Takht Jathedar.
Sukhbir had tendered his resignation on November 16 last year. However, the committee initially refused to accept it and urged him to reconsider. They warned that the entire committee would resign if he stepped down.
The Akal Takht, the highest Sikh authority, had declared Sukhbir Singh Badal and other leaders guilty of religious misconduct. It directed the SAD to accept his resignation during a December 2 edict.
After the resignation was accepted, Sukhbir Singh Badal thanked party workers and leaders. He expressed gratitude for their support throughout his tenure.
In August last year, the Akal Takht declared him “tankhaiya” (guilty of religious misconduct) for mistakes committed by the SAD government in Punjab between 2007 and 2017. Following this, Sukhbir underwent religious punishment, as directed by the Sikh authority.
The resignation marks a significant shift in Punjab’s political landscape, with the SAD now preparing for new leadership ahead of upcoming elections.
