Superstitious Speech by Spiritual Orator Triggers Controversy at Chennai Schools
A controversial Superstitious speech by spiritual orator Maha Vishnu at two government schools in Chennai has ignited debate about the role of spirituality and superstition in educational institutions. The orator’s remarks, suggesting that deformities and disabilities in the present life are caused by misdeeds in past lives, have drawn widespread criticism.
The Incident
In a video that NDTV could not independently verify, Maha Vishnu is seen making these claims during a speech, while a differently-abled male teacher objected. The video shows the two engaged in a heated argument, with Maha Vishnu justifying his statements.
Public Backlash and Action
Following public outrage, the school education department acted swiftly, transferring the two headmistresses of the schools where Maha Vishnu spoke. School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi emphasized the importance of fostering scientific temper in schools rather than promoting superstitions.
“Severe action will be taken once a written report is received regarding who arranged this event,” the minister stated. When asked specifically about action against Maha Vishnu, he confirmed, “Yes, he exceeded limits on campus.”
Maha Vishnu Responds
Maha Vishnu, founder of the Paramporul Foundation, responded to the controversy in a video from Australia, saying he would return to Chennai to address the issue. “Why should I hide? I’ve done nothing wrong. I believe in the legal system,” he said.

Political Repercussions
The incident has also fueled political tensions, with the AIADMK accusing the ruling DMK of promoting spirituality in schools to appease the BJP. AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan claimed, “This is a secret pact between the DMK and the BJP.” The DMK, however, denied these allegations.
Broader Context
This controversy comes amid other recent incidents where the DMK has been linked to the promotion of Hindu faith-related programs in educational institutions. The ruling party had also recently hosted a conference on Lord Muruga, leading to further speculation about its relationship with the BJP.
Chief Minister MK Stalin dismissed such speculations, explaining that the recent ₹100 commemorative coin release in honor of late Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, which was attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, was purely a government event with no political undertones.
Conclusion
As the debate over superstition and scientific temper in schools continues, authorities are investigating the circumstances that allowed Maha Vishnu’s speech to take place. The outcome of this inquiry could shape future policies on guest speakers in educational institutions.
