Suvendu Adhikari Slams Mamata Banerjee Over Hospital Death, Seeks Resignation
Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari called for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation on Wednesday. He held her responsible for a woman’s death allegedly caused by expired intravenous fluid at a government hospital.
Adhikari led a BJP delegation to Swasthya Bhavan in Kolkata. Speaking to reporters, he said, “The Chief Minister, as the health minister, cannot escape accountability. She must resign and face legal action.”
The woman died at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital after childbirth. Four others fell critically ill. The health department formed a 13-member committee to investigate. The state government also ordered a CID probe into the incident.
Adhikari Demands Arrests and Judicial Probe
Adhikari blamed the incident on criminal negligence in the healthcare system. He demanded the arrest of Health Secretary N.S. Nigam and the hospital superintendent.
He also urged for an inquiry led by the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court. He called for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising both CBI and CID officials.
“The government is trying to cover up the incident, just like they did in the RG Kar Hospital case,” Adhikari said. “We won’t let that happen. Our MLAs will launch a massive street protest soon.”
Compensation and Transparency Demands
Adhikari demanded a compensation of ₹50 lakh for the bereaved family. He also called for the publication of a list of patients who received the same IV fluid in the past month.
Later, he filed an FIR at Electronics Complex police station, holding health officials responsible for the woman’s death.
TMC Hits Back
TMC spokesperson Joy Prakash Majumdar accused Adhikari of politicizing the tragedy. He questioned why Adhikari remained silent on child deaths in BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh.
“Adhikari always looks for political opportunities. He never raised similar issues in BJP-ruled states,” Majumdar said.
The controversy has sparked debates over healthcare management in West Bengal. Meanwhile, the BJP plans to intensify protests against the government.
