Nawab Malik Trails in Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar NCP leader Nawab Malik, 65, is trailing by 32,967 votes against Samajwadi Party’s Abu Azmi in Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar. Malik, who won the 2019 elections from Anushakti Nagar, shifted to contest from Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar in 2024. Malik faces strong competition from Abu Azmi, the sitting MLA backed by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), and Shiv Sena’s Suresh Patil. Azmi previously won the constituency in 2009, 2014, and 2019. A Veteran in Maharashtra Politics Malik is the NCP’s national spokesperson and its Mumbai president. He began his political career in 1984 but gained prominence after winning assembly seats in 1996, 1999, and 2004 from Nehru Nagar. He later won the Anushakti Nagar seat in 2009 but lost in 2014 to Shiv Sena’s Tukaram Kate. Malik joined the NCP after leaving the Samajwadi Party due to differences with Azmi. Known for his social work in education and minority welfare, he commands influence among the Muslim community in Mumbai. Controversy and Challenges In 2022, Malik faced allegations under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Act by IRS officer Sameer Wankhede. The officer accused Malik of making defamatory remarks about his caste during interviews and on social media. Despite his significant contributions, Malik now faces one of the toughest battles of his career.
