First Cabinet Decisions of 2025 Focus on Farmers Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed the government’s dedication to farmers by celebrating key decisions from the Union Cabinet's first meeting of 2025. These include extending the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), the Restructured Weather-Based Crop Insurance Scheme (RWBCIS), and a special package for affordable Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) fertilizers. In a message on X, PM Modi stated, “Ours is a government fully committed to furthering the welfare of farmers. The first Cabinet of 2025 is dedicated to enhancing prosperity for our farmers.” However last year the government uses tear gas and water cannons on the farmers protesting against the government. Key Decisions for Agriculture 1. Extension of Crop Insurance Schemes The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana and RWBCIS will continue until 2025-26, with an outlay of ₹69,515.71 crore from 2021-22 to 2025-26. These schemes ensure risk coverage for crops against natural calamities, benefiting farmers across India. To enhance transparency, a Fund for Innovation and Technology (FIAT) has been approved with a corpus of ₹824.77 crore. This fund supports technological advancements like: YES-TECH (Yield Estimation System using Technology): Using remote sensing technology for crop yield estimates. WINDS (Weather Information and Network Data Systems): Establishing weather stations and rain gauges for hyper-local data. 2. Affordable Fertilizer Initiative The Cabinet extended the special package for affordable DAP fertilizers. The estimated budget for this initiative is ₹3,850 crore. This move ensures consistent availability of DAP at reduced prices, supporting farmers nationwide. State-Level Impact States like Madhya Pradesh have already adopted 100% technology-driven yield estimation under YES-TECH. WINDS, designed to enhance weather data collection, is being implemented in several states, including Kerala, Assam, and Rajasthan, with a 90:10 central-state fund-sharing model. Efforts are ongoing to prioritize farmers in northeastern states, ensuring inclusive benefits while reallocating funds for other agricultural developments as needed. Leaders Laud Cabinet Decisions Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan praised the government’s focus on farmer welfare. “Agriculture development and farmer welfare remain the central government’s top priorities,” he said.
