The Centre has launched a new fast-track immigration programme at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, drastically reducing the time taken for immigration clearance from a minimum of 30 minutes to just a few seconds. The Fast Track Immigration Trusted Traveller Programme (FTI-TTP), introduced by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), uses advanced biometric technology to offer a seamless experience for pre-verified Indian nationals and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders. Nationwide Expansion Plans The FTI-TTP, which began at Delhi airport on June 22, will soon expand to 20 other cities across India. Major airports such as Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin, and Ahmedabad are expected to implement the programme in the near future. Eventually, it will be available at 21 airports nationwide, providing travelers with a faster, more efficient immigration process. "This programme is designed to make travel seamless for everyone as India becomes an increasingly popular international destination," a senior MHA official said. "Eligible passengers can use automated gates (e-gates) and skip regular immigration queues for a smoother travel experience." How the System Works Under the FTI-TTP, pre-verified travelers are added to a White List of "Trusted Travellers" after completing necessary verifications through an online portal. The Bureau of Immigration manages the fast-track immigration process, collecting biometrics and storing them for use at automated e-gates at airports. Travelers who pass through the e-gates will have their boarding passes, passports, and biometrics scanned for instant authentication. Once verified, the e-gate will automatically open, and immigration clearance is completed within seconds. The system has already seen significant success at Delhi airport, with 18,400 Indian passport holders and OCI cardholders registering for the programme. The Union government has ambitious plans to expand the programme to all major airports, ultimately facilitating faster, smoother international travel for millions. How to Apply for FTI-TTP Travelers who wish to use the fast-track service can apply online at www.ftittp.mha.gov.in. Applicants must provide the necessary details for verification, which the Bureau of Immigration will review. Once approved, applicants will be invited to schedule an appointment to provide biometric data at international airports or Foreigners Regional Registration Offices. The registration for FTI-TTP is valid for a maximum of five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. Applicants must ensure their passport is valid for at least six months when applying for the programme. Next Phases and Future Expansion The fast-track programme will be rolled out in two phases. In the first phase, Indian nationals and OCI cardholders will benefit from the system. The second phase will include foreign travelers, further expanding the reach and impact of the FTI-TTP programme. The initiative not only streamlines the immigration process but also minimizes human intervention, making it more efficient and secure.
