Jharkhand Assembly Elections 2024: Key Updates on Phase 1 Polling The first phase of the Jharkhand Assembly Elections 2024 kicked off on Wednesday, November 13. Voting is underway across 43 constituencies in 15 districts, starting at 7 AM and set to conclude by 5 PM. The second phase, covering 38 constituencies, will take place on November 20, with counting scheduled for November 23. The current assembly's term ends on January 5, 2025. Soren Addresses Voters Before Polling Chief Minister Hemant Soren addressed the public ahead of the polls, emphasizing key issues. Campaigns by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have centered on topics like tribal rights, immigration, and corruption. Seat Distribution: A Closer Look The BJP is contesting 68 seats, supported by allies AJSU (10 seats), JD(U) (2 seats), and LJP (Ram Vilas) (1 seat). The INDIA bloc, comprising JMM (41 seats), Congress (30), RJD (6), and CPI (ML) (4), aims to secure a majority. Key Highlights from Phase 1 Here are the top 10 updates: Voter Turnout: Out of 2.6 crore voters, 1.37 crore are eligible for Phase 1. Candidates: 683 candidates are vying for 81 seats, including 609 men, 73 women, and one third-gender individual. Polling Stations: 15,344 polling stations have been set up, with 12,716 in rural and 2,628 in urban areas. Women and disabled staff are manning select booths. Constituency Breakdown: Of the 43 constituencies, 17 are general, 20 are reserved for Scheduled Tribes, and six for Scheduled Castes. Past Performance: In 2019, JMM won 30 seats, while BJP managed 25, a drop from 37 in 2014. The JMM-Congress-RJD alliance secured a majority with 47 seats. Seizures: Chief Electoral Officer K. Ravi Kumar reported seizures worth ₹208.78 crore since the Model Code of Conduct was implemented. Polling Readiness: Ranchi’s returning officer confirmed all arrangements, including basic amenities and web-casting facilities. Congress Promises: The party pledges 250 units of free electricity, a caste-based census, and the repeal of the BJP’s Land Bank Policy. JMM Agenda: JMM plans to set up schools, increase MNREGA wages, and reserve 33% of state jobs for women. BJP's Focus: The BJP aims to implement UCC without affecting tribals, promises five lakh jobs, and pledges housing for all.
