Despite recent growth in Nepal's aviation sector, safety standards, training, and maintenance have not kept pace. Due to safety concerns, the European Union has banned all Nepali carriers from its airspace. Nepal's challenging geography, featuring high-altitude runways surrounded by mountainous terrain, adds to the complexity for pilots, with weather conditions often being unpredictable. The country's last major aviation disaster occurred in January last year when a Yeti Airlines plane crashed while landing in Pokhara, killing all 72 people on board. This incident was the deadliest since 1992 when a Pakistan International Airlines flight crashed near Kathmandu, resulting in 167 fatalities. That same year, a Thai Airways flight also crashed near Kathmandu, killing 113 people.
