Delhi Court Drops Sedition Case Against Shehla Rashid A Delhi court has closed the 2019 sedition case against former JNU student leader Shehla Rashid. The decision came after the Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) withdrew the sanction to prosecute her. Court Approves Closure Plea On February 27, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Anuj Kumar Singh accepted Delhi Police’s plea to drop the case. The application stated that the Screening Committee had reviewed the matter and recommended withdrawal from prosecution. The LG approved this recommendation. Case Background The case stemmed from Rashid’s tweets in 2019 about the situation in Jammu & Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370. She alleged that the armed forces were torturing civilians and ransacking houses. Following a complaint by advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava, Delhi Police filed an FIR against Rashid. She was charged with sedition and other offences under the Indian Penal Code. Interim Protection from Arrest In September 2019, a New Delhi Sessions Court granted Rashid interim protection from arrest.
