Video Shows Exact Moment Plane Crashed At Kathmandu Airport
Plane Crash at Tribhuvan International Airport: The crash happened around 11:15 am local time (0530 GMT), as confirmed by Nepal’s military.
A tragic plane crash at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu involved a flight carrying 19 passengers. The accident occurred during takeoff, resulting in multiple fatalities. Only the pilot survived and is currently undergoing medical treatment, according to police spokesman Dan Bahadur Karki, as reported by AFP. Local media reported 18 fatalities.
A dramatic video showing the exact moment the Saurya Airlines plane crashed has surfaced online. The footage reveals the aircraft engulfed in flames shortly after skidding off the runway.
The crash took place at approximately 11:15 am local time (0530 GMT), as confirmed by an official statement from Nepal’s military. “Rescue work is ongoing,” the statement added.
The Kathmandu Post reported that the flight, including the aircrew, was en route to Pokhara, a popular tourist destination in the Himalayas. Another news outlet, Khabarhub, reported that the plane caught fire after skidding on the runway, emitting a thick plume of smoke.
Saurya Airlines operates exclusively with Bombardier CRJ 200 jets. Despite recent growth in Nepal’s aviation sector, safety standards, training, and maintenance have not kept pace.
Due to safety concerns, the European Union has banned all Nepali carriers from its airspace. Nepal’s challenging geography, featuring high-altitude runways surrounded by mountainous terrain, adds to the complexity for pilots, with weather conditions often being unpredictable.
The country’s last major aviation disaster occurred in January last year when a Yeti Airlines plane crashed while landing in Pokhara, killing all 72 people on board. This incident was the deadliest since 1992 when a Pakistan International Airlines flight crashed near Kathmandu, resulting in 167 fatalities. That same year, a Thai Airways flight also crashed near Kathmandu, killing 113 people.
