Vinesh Phogat to Run for Haryana Elections
Wrestler Vinesh Phogat, now a Congress member, is set to contest the Haryana Assembly elections from the Julana seat. Her name was confirmed in a meeting of the Congress Central Election Committee.
While Phogat is gearing up for the election. Wrestler Bajrang Punia, also joined Congress, has not been given a ticket. Instead, Punia has been assigned a leadership position within the party.
Phogat’s New Chapter in Politics
Phogat, speaking about her political journey, called it a new chapter in her life. She emphasized her dedication to advocating for athletes’ rights. Referring to the sexual harassment case against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Singh, she said, “Only Congress understood our struggle. This is a new chapter in my life, and I will work for other athletes so they don’t face the same hardships.”
She vowed to stand by her fellow athletes, saying, “I want my sisters to know, if no one else stands with you, I will. Congress will.”

Punia Takes on a Leadership Role
Bajrang Punia has been appointed the Working Chairman of All India Kisan Congress. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity and pledged to support farmers in their struggles.
“I will work alongside farmers in their fight and serve as a true soldier of the party,” he said, thanking Congress leaders for the appointment.
Phogat and Punia’s Protest Against BJP
Both Phogat and Punia were key figures in the protests against Brij Bhushan Singh, accused of sexual harassment. The wrestlers’ protest had been criticized by BJP leaders as politically motivated after Rahul Gandhi met with Phogat and Punia.
Despite the controversy, Phogat and Punia’s political careers are gaining momentum as they join Congress and take on new roles.
Congress-AAP Alliance in Haryana?
Meanwhile, talks between Congress and AAP for a possible alliance in Haryana are ongoing. AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chaddha hinted at a potential alliance to challenge BJP in the upcoming elections. The two parties have already collaborated in recent elections, including in Haryana, Gujarat, and Delhi.
