Speaker Blocks BJP MLAs from Assembly Documents
West Bengal Assembly Speaker Biman Bandyopadhyay has directed the House secretary not to provide official documents to BJP legislators. The move came after BJP MLAs tore official papers inside the Assembly during a protest. They had sought an adjournment motion over alleged attacks on temples but walked out when their request was denied.
The Speaker also rejected their proposal for a Bill on children’s rights. He accused BJP MLAs of repeatedly tearing Assembly documents during protests.
“Do not give them any papers,” Bandyopadhyay instructed the secretary.
BJP Calls It an Attack on Democracy
Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari slammed the decision, calling it the “rarest incident in Indian constitutional history.” He accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government of suppressing opposition voices.
“There is no democracy inside the Assembly. The government is silencing dissent using force,” he said.
Adhikari, who is suspended till March 18 for allegedly insulting the Speaker, led a protest outside the Assembly against the ruling.
BJP Alleges Attacks on Hindus
Adhikari accused the government of failing to protect Hindus in Tamluk, Murshidabad, and Uluberia. He claimed:
- Temples were attacked, idols vandalized, and fires set.
- Shops and homes of Hindus were looted.
- People celebrating India’s Champions Trophy win were attacked.
- A police officer in Uluberia was injured while trying to control violence.
He condemned the Speaker for rejecting BJP’s adjournment motion, calling it an attempt to silence Bengal’s people.
Holi Celebration Restrictions Spark Controversy
Adhikari also accused the police of forcing Hindus to end Holi celebrations by 11 AM on March 14. He claimed this was done to accommodate another community’s Friday prayers.
- In Birbhum, police ordered early Holi celebrations in Santiniketan.
- In Amdanga, police told people not to drink alcohol during Holi.
He called the TMC government “Muslim League 2” and labeled the police “communal.”
BJP Vows to Oust TMC from Power
Adhikari predicted that Hindus would overthrow TMC in the next elections.
“We will defeat Speaker Biman Banerjee and CM Mamata Banerjee. After BJP takes power, we will remove TMC’s Muslim MLAs from the Assembly,” he said.
TMC Responds
Senior TMC leader Firhad Hakim dismissed Adhikari’s remarks. “I won’t respond to a **‘keora’ (mild insult in Bengali),” he said.
TMC MLA Shaukat Molla warned that Muslim MLAs wouldn’t stay silent if BJP acted on its threats.
With tensions escalating, the political battle in West Bengal continues. BJP plans a bigger protest outside the Assembly in the coming days.
