Amid ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called on the state’s citizens to maintain peace and avoid communal violence. She emphasized that the developments in Bangladesh are a matter for the Ministry of External Affairs and refrained from commenting on them directly.
“I would appeal to all citizens of West Bengal to maintain peace and avoid all forms of provocation. I appeal to people of all communities with folded hands to remain calm and not engage in any communal behavior or take the law into their own hands,” Banerjee said, addressing reporters at the West Bengal assembly.
Banerjee also urged political parties to refrain from commenting or posting on social media about the Bangladesh crisis, as such actions could disrupt peace. She criticized BJP leaders for making inappropriate comments online.
“We are all concerned about the situation in Bangladesh. One must not write or post something that may disrupt peace in Bengal or the country. I urge leaders of all political parties and everyone else not to post anything that will disrupt peace here,” Banerjee stated.
The West Bengal police also issued an official statement, asking the public not to post provocative content about the situation in Bangladesh and to ignore rumors.
“The state administration is alert and vigilant. Keep calm and maintain peace. Given the current situation in neighboring Bangladesh, we have noticed a few posts and videos on social media that may create discord and unrest,” the state police posted on their X handle.
Previously, on July 21, Banerjee offered shelter to ‘helpless people’ from Bangladesh, who had been facing violent protests led by students against civil service reservations.
