
The Gujarat government has announced the creation of a new district named Vav-Tharad. This district has been carved out of Banaskantha, with Tharad serving as its headquarters. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s cabinet approved this decision on Wednesday.

- New District: Vav-Tharad will include eight talukas—Vav, Tharad, Bhabhar, Dhanera, Suigam, Lakhni, Diodar, and Kankrej.
- Area Split: Vav-Tharad spans 6,257 sq. km, while the reorganized Banaskantha district covers 4,486 sq. km.
- Talukas in Banaskantha: Six talukas remain in Banaskantha, with Palanpur as its headquarters.
- Villages Covered: Each district will manage approximately 600 villages.
Nine New Municipal Corporations
The state cabinet also approved the formation of nine new municipal corporations. This decision increases Gujarat’s municipal corporations from eight to 17.

Benefits of Restructuring
The government aims to strengthen governance and improve essential services like roads, sewerage, sanitation, and healthcare by creating a new district in Gujarat. This restructuring aligns with NITI Aayog’s vision of ‘Cities as Engines of Growth’ and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to delivering on promises.
The new municipal corporations will facilitate major projects, including:

- BRTS Development
- Riverfront Projects
