CM Expresses Regret for Violence
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh apologized to the people of Manipur for the ethnic violence that began in May 2023. Speaking at an event on Nupee Lal Numit 2024 in Imphal West, he called the year “unfortunate” and expressed deep regret.
“This year has been tough,” N Biren Singh said. “I apologize to those who lost loved ones or had to leave their homes. I truly regret the situation.”
Hope for Peace in 2025
Singh emphasized the progress toward peace in recent months. “With the New Year 2025, I hope normalcy and peace will return. Let’s move forward together for a peaceful and prosperous Manipur,” he added.
Background of the Conflict
The violence started with clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities. Initially confined to Imphal Valley, it later spread to the Jiribam district in June 2023. The unrest escalated when a man’s death sparked widespread arson, gunfights, and property destruction.
Rising Weapon Smuggling
Officials reported an increase in smuggled arms and equipment from Myanmar. Security forces recovered weapons, bulletproof vests, and military fatigues during operations in conflict zones.
Impact of the Violence
Since May 2023, over 250 people have died, and thousands have been displaced. Ethnic tensions continue to pose challenges to stability in the state.
Singh urged all communities to leave the past behind and work toward unity, signaling hope for a new beginning in 2025.
