Dalit Wedding Disrupted by Caste-Based Violence in Mathura
A Dalit family’s wedding in Karnawal village, Mathura, was violently disrupted on Friday night following a minor traffic dispute that escalated into a caste-based attack. The grooms’ families canceled the marriages and left, fearing further violence. Minister for Social Welfare Asim Arun has assured strict action against the accused and full government support for the victims.
Minister Pledges Justice and Support
Visiting the affected family on Wednesday, Asim Arun vowed legal action, stating that the accused will be booked under the Gangster Act and prosecuted in a fast-track court.
“The attackers believed they could assault our people and walk free. The Chief Minister has taken this matter seriously, and justice will be ensured,” he said.
He also assured that the government would assist in arranging the daughters’ weddings in the future, reaffirming its commitment to eradicating caste-based discrimination.
“Modernization is not just about technology; it is about ensuring social equality,” he added.
Attack Triggered by Minor Dispute
According to the FIR, the violence began when the brides-to-be and their relatives were returning from a beauty parlour. Their car accidentally brushed against a motorcycle, leading to an argument.
- Three men on the motorcycle initiated a fight, which quickly escalated into a physical assault on the brides and their family members.
- The attackers reportedly snatched valuables, dragged the women out of the car, and called for reinforcements, intensifying the violence.
- Despite police intervention, the grooms’ families decided to leave, canceling the weddings.
The attack created tension in the village, leading to another wedding from the Yadav community being relocated to Mathura city instead of Karnawal.
Legal Action and Arrests
A case was registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including rioting, wrongful confinement, snatching, and attempt to murder, along with provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
- Mathura police have arrested all 15 accused, most of whom belong to the OBC community.
- Authorities, including SC/ST Commission member Dinesh Bharat, have visited the family to ensure justice.
- Local BJP leaders, including MLA Pooran Prakash, accompanied Minister Arun during his visit.
With swift arrests and strict legal measures in place, the state government aims to prevent such incidents and reinforce its commitment to protecting marginalized communities.
